Amersfoort recently won the prestigious European City of the World Award, which is a fantastic achievement for the city and its residents. This recognition highlights the wonderful blend of historic charm and modern innovation that Amersfoort has to offer.

It is a city bustling with culture, art and architecture, and nurturing a vibrant community. The residents of Amersfoort are proud of their city and the way it manages to combine heritage and progress.

The prize

Along with Estepona in Spain and Exeter in England, Amersfoort was on the shortlist for this international award. The decision on which city would receive the prestigious title was in the hands of the Academy of Urbanism (AoU). This Academy consists of a diverse group of international scientists, experts and politicians.

Amersfoort is in good company with other cities that have won this award in previous years. Previous winners include Berlin, Copenhagen, Lisbon, Porto and Rotterdam.

Final Verdict

During their visit to Amersfoort, the Academy jury looked critically at six pillars: attractiveness, economy, sustainability, local character, well-being and accessibility. In the final report, the Keistad received a predominantly positive assessment. The jury praised the city for its high quality of life, progressive planning and preservation of unique heritage and character. Juror Jon Phipps of the AoU emphasizes, "From limiting car access to the historic city center to providing diverse and high-quality affordable housing, the well-being and happiness of all Amersfoort residents are clearly paramount."

Skills Heroes Finals

What an achievement! Roosje, a student at Hotelschool Amersfoort, did a magnificent job at Skills The Finals 2024. She won the silver medal in the host/hostess category of Skills Heroes. For those unfamiliar with Skills Heroes, it is a national vocational competition in which young professionals in various professions compete to showcase and perfect their skills.

The competition assignment

As emerging hosts, participants will be challenged to deliver high-quality, hospitable service. During the competition, they will work both independently and in collaboration with a chef. In addition to the importance of a well-tailored menu and wine selection and knowledge of table techniques, dishes and beverages, participants' creativity is also called for. Think of coming up with a unique cocktail with a twist, an exclusive coffee or a surprising table preparation.

Silver medal

Roosje's dedication and hard work certainly paid off, as she took second place at the Skills Heroes Finals! And we are very proud of this achievement at Leerhotel Het Klooster. We want to congratulate Roosje with this wonderful achievement and her incredible perseverance. It is inspiring to see how she showed her talent and skills.
